How the calculation works

A 5/3/1 calculator first creates or accepts a training max, then applies the percentages for the selected 5/3/1 version. The page must state whether the input is a true 1RM or training max and must name the template used. Percentages should never be applied to the wrong base.

  • Training max = entered 1RM × selected training-max percentage, unless the user directly enters a training max.
  • Working load = training max × set percentage.
  • Show exact weight, rounded load, rounding direction, and actual percentage after rounding.
  • Classic 5/3/1 and 5s PRO are different options. Do not merge their repetition instructions or AMRAP rules.

Worked example

With a 180 kg estimated 1RM and an 85% training-max setting, the training max is 153 kg. A set at 75% is exactly 114.75 kg. If the selected increment is 2.5 kg, the interface must show whether it loads 115 kg and that 115 kg is 75.16% of the training max.

How to interpret the result

  • The percentages in the table use the training max, not the true 1RM.
  • Jim Wendler's public beginner guidance favors an intentionally conservative training max and says to err too light when uncertain.
  • Deload timing, supplemental work, and progression differ across published 5/3/1 versions. The calculator should expose the selected version and avoid claiming one schedule is universal.

No. It is a deliberately reduced programming number.

Use the percentage specified by the program version you are following. Official public beginner guidance recommends a conservative choice.

Are all 5 3 1 sets AMRAP

No. Rep instructions differ by template, including 5s PRO and versions with plus sets.

How should weights be rounded

Use available plate increments and display exact and rounded values.
