1RM Versus Training Max

A one-repetition maximum describes the heaviest load a lifter can complete once under defined conditions. A training max is a deliberately reduced number used to calculate work sets. They answer different questions and should never share the same label.

Three numbers that should stay separate

Tested 1RM is an observed single repetition. Record the date, exercise standard, equipment, and setting.

Estimated 1RM is a model output from weight and repetitions or another method. Record the equation and input set.

Training max is a programming base created by multiplying a tested or estimated 1RM by a chosen percentage.

How the numbers connect

If a tested 1RM is 180 kg and a program uses 90%, the training max is 162 kg. A work set at 75% of that training max is 121.5 kg, not 135 kg. Applying 75% directly to the true 1RM would use the wrong base.

If the source is an estimated 1RM, the training max inherits the estimate's uncertainty. Conservative selection and visible rounding are therefore part of the method.

When each number is useful

Use tested 1RM for meet records or infrequent benchmark testing under controlled conditions. Use estimated 1RM to monitor strength from normal training sets. Use training max when a program tells you to calculate work from a reduced base.

Do not increase a training max merely because one session felt easy. Follow the progression rule of the selected program and retain technique and bar speed context.

A practical workflow

Estimate or test the lift under clearly recorded conditions.

Choose the training-max percentage required by the program.

Calculate exact and loadable training max values.

Apply each work-set percentage to the training max.

Use a plate calculator to build the rounded target and record the actual load.
