Estimate a deadlift 1RM when you need a programming number from normal training. Test a true maximum only when the result itself matters and the lifter has appropriate experience, technique, preparation, equipment, and supervision.

What an estimate can tell you

Repetition equations extrapolate from a submaximal set. They are practical because the set can come from ordinary training, but different equations return different values. The estimate should name its equation and preserve the input conditions.

Lower-repetition sets usually require less extrapolation. High-repetition deadlifts can be limited by grip, conditioning, and technique before maximal strength is reached.

Conditions that change the meaning

Record conventional or sumo stance, dead-stop or touch-and-go repetitions, grip, straps, belt, bar type, bar height, and range of motion. Do not apply universal percentage corrections between these conditions; estimate each variation from its own data when possible.

When a test is appropriate

A true maximum is useful for competition preparation or a deliberately scheduled benchmark. It is a poor choice when pain, illness, poor technique, severe fatigue, or unfamiliarity with heavy singles is present. Use appropriate spotters or platform safety and stop if symptoms or technique create concern.

How to use the result

For day-to-day programming, convert the estimate into a conservative training max and monitor trends across comparable sets. A change in equation, grip, rep style, or equipment can create a false trend even when strength is unchanged.
