How the calculation works
Multiply a tested or estimated one rep max by the percentage required by your program. A 180 kg 1RM at 90% gives a 162 kg training max. If the bar loads in 2.5 kg steps, the result must show the exact value and the selected rounded value separately.
- Training max = one rep max × selected percentage / 100.
- Keep the source max labeled as tested or estimated.
- Round once at the final load stage and disclose the increment and direction.
- If a program supplies its own training-max rule, that rule takes priority over a generic preset.
Worked example
A lifter enters an estimated 137.5 kg 1RM and selects 85%. The exact training max is 116.875 kg. With 2.5 kg bar increments, nearest rounding gives 117.5 kg; rounding down gives 115 kg. The tool should allow or disclose the rule rather than hiding the difference.
How to interpret the result
- A training max is a programming base. It is not a claim that strength has decreased.
- There is no universal training-max percentage. The correct setting comes from the program or coach.
- When the source 1RM is estimated, all derived values inherit that uncertainty.
Limits and safety
- Do not automatically raise a training max because an individual session feels easy.
- Do not use a generic 90% setting when a named program specifies another value.
- The calculation does not account for fatigue, injury, technique, or lift-specific readiness.
