How the calculation works

Subtract the bar and collars from the target weight, then divide the remaining load equally between both sides. For 100 kg on a 20 kg bar with no collars, each side needs 40 kg, which can be two 20 kg plates per side.

  • Weight per side = (target − bar − total collar weight) / 2.
  • Allocate available plate pairs from largest to smallest without exceeding the selected rounding rule.
  • Exact mode must report impossible when the inventory cannot build the target.
  • Closest mode must show the achieved total, the difference from target, and whether the result is below or above.

Worked example

Target 142.5 kg with a 20 kg bar and 5 kg total collars leaves 117.5 kg for plates, or 58.75 kg per side. With pairs of 25, 20, 10, 2.5, 1.25, and 0.5 kg available, the tool should either build an exact pair combination or state the closest achievable load and residual.

How to interpret the result

  • A 20 kg bar and a 45 lb bar are separate choices; they are not exactly equivalent.
  • Plate labels can be kilograms or pounds. Do not mix units unless every item is converted consistently.
  • Real bar and plate weights can vary. Competition equipment may have calibrated tolerances, while general gym equipment may not.

Limits and safety

  • Never recommend unbalanced sides.
  • The inventory must count pairs, not individual plates, unless the interface explicitly records individual availability.
  • The calculator does not confirm rack capacity, bar rating, plate fit, or safe lifting technique.

Do I include the bar weight

Yes. The target is the total loaded bar, so the bar is subtracted before calculating plates.

Do collars count

Include their combined weight when using weighted collars.

What if the exact weight is impossible

Show the closest valid load and the difference rather than silently changing the target.

Can I mix kilogram and pound plates

Avoid it. If unavoidable, convert every component precisely and display the resulting mixed-unit total.
