Minutes to Hours Conversion Chart

On this page

Use this chart to convert minute values into decimal hours and HH:MM duration. The exact formula is minutes / 60. The two-decimal column is a display value; values such as 1/60 repeat and are rounded.

How the chart is calculated

Divide minutes by 60. For 41 minutes, 41/60 = 0.683333..., which displays as 0.68 at two decimals. For 45 minutes, 45/60 = 0.75 exactly.

The chart is a lookup aid, not a policy table. If you need a live calculation, use the Minutes to Hours Converter. If a payroll system requests a particular two-decimal convention, compare its documentation with the Payroll Minutes-to-Decimal Chart.

Exact values versus two-decimal values

Two decimals cannot represent every minute perfectly. One minute is exactly 1/60 hour, but 0.02 hour equals 1.2 minutes. Preserve the original minute total or a higher-precision value when the result will be converted back later.

Common mistakes

  • Do not divide by 100. Forty-five minutes is 0.75 hour, not 0.45.
  • Do not read 1.30 as 1:30. It equals 1 hour 18 minutes.
  • Do not add rounded line items when the exact total is available.
  • Do not apply a payroll interval merely because a two-decimal chart is shown.

Frequently asked questions

What is 20 minutes in decimal hours?

20/60 = 0.333333..., normally displayed as 0.33 hours.

What is 50 minutes in decimal hours?

50/60 = 0.833333..., normally displayed as 0.83 hours.

Why do some charts differ by 0.01?

They may use different precision or interval rules. Check whether the table shows exact conversion rounded for display or time adjusted to a policy interval.
