HHMM versus Decimal Hours

HH:MM and decimal hours can describe the same duration, but the digits do not mean the same thing. A colon separates hours and minute components; a decimal point marks a fraction of one hour.

How to convert HH:MM to decimal hours
Keep the hours and divide the minutes by 60:
decimal hours = hours + minutes / 60
For 7:45, calculate 7 + 45/60 = 7.75 hours.

How to convert a decimal back to HH:MM
Keep the whole number and multiply the fractional part by 60. For 7.45 hours, 0.45 x 60 = 27 minutes, so the answer is 7:27.
Why this causes payroll and billing errors
If 8 hours 30 minutes is entered as 8.30 instead of 8.50, the numeric record represents 8 hours 18 minutes, a difference of 12 minutes. The calculator cannot decide whether a source value that uses a period was intended as decimal notation or informal HH.MM notation. The input label and the receiving system’s documentation must make that decision explicit.
Input rules for forms and imports
- Use a colon for an hours-and-minutes string: 8:30.
- Use a decimal point only for a fraction of an hour: 8.50.
- Label columns as Duration HH:MM or Decimal Hours rather than Time.
- Preserve leading zeros for machine-readable duration when required: 08:05.
- Do not assume 8.5, 8.50, and 8:50 are equivalent; 8.5 and 8.50 equal 8:30, while 8:50 equals 8.833333... hours.
Durations longer than 24 hours
HH:MM can represent accumulated duration, such as 40:15, if the system is designed for duration. A time-of-day field may wrap after 24 hours. In Excel, use the bracketed [h]:mm format for accumulated duration.

Is 1.5 hours the same as 1:50?
No. 1.5 hours is 1:30. A duration of 1:50 equals 1.833333... hours.
Is 30 minutes 0.30 hour?
No. 30/60 = 0.50 hour.
What should a payroll import use?
Use the format documented by the payroll system. If it requests decimal hours, convert the minute component by dividing by 60.
