whole hours = floor(decimal hours)

remaining minutes = fractional hour x 60

For second-level output, multiply the full decimal value by 3,600, round once to the supported second precision, and split the total.

Why rounded decimals do not always reverse exactly

A two-decimal number may have already lost precision. The original 8 hours 41 minutes is 8.683333... hours, but a two-decimal report may show 8.68. Reversing 8.68 produces 8 hours 40 minutes 48 seconds. The difference comes from earlier rounding, not from a faulty reverse formula.

When reversibility matters, store total seconds, total minutes, or a higher-precision decimal with the record.

Carrying seconds into minutes

For 1.999999 hours, multiplying by 3,600 gives 7,199.9964 seconds. With one final nearest-second operation, that becomes 7,200 seconds or 2:00:00. Rounding minutes and seconds separately can create an inconsistent answer, so normalize first and round once.

Decimal point versus colon

1.30 and 1:30 are different. The first is a decimal fraction and equals 1 hour 18 minutes. The second is an hours-and-minutes duration and equals 1.50 decimal hours. Read HH:MM versus Decimal Hours if the source format is ambiguous.
