How the calculation works
The original Wilks score multiplies a lifter's total by a bodyweight coefficient derived from a sex-specific fifth-degree polynomial. Enter bodyweight and total, keep the calculation in kilograms, and label the result Original Wilks unless the tool has separately implemented and tested Wilks 2020.
- Original Wilks = total in kilograms ร 500 / (a + bยทw + cยทwยฒ + dยทwยณ + eยทwโด + fยทwโต).
- Men: a โ216.0475144, b 16.2606339, c โ0.002388645, d โ0.00113732, e 0.00000701863, f โ0.00000001291.
- Women: a 594.31747775582, b โ27.23842536447, c 0.82112226871, d โ0.00930733913, e 0.00004731582, f โ0.00000009054.
- Convert pounds to kilograms before evaluation and round only the final display.

For the next decision, read DOTS, Wilks, and IPF GL differences.
Worked example
For a 600 kg total at 82.5 kg bodyweight, the original men's Wilks denominator is 746.3727846295. The coefficient is 500 / 746.3727846295 = 0.6699065270, so the score is 600 ร 0.6699065270 = 401.9439162, displayed as 401.94. Label this Original Wilks.
Continue with the DOTS Calculator. Compare a powerlifting total with the DOTS formula.
How to interpret the result
- Wilks scores compare totals across bodyweights within the selected formula. They do not convert one lifter's total into another lifter's expected total.
- Original Wilks, Wilks 2020, DOTS, and IPF GL are distinct systems. Scores are not interchangeable.
- Do not attach strength levels to a score unless the page identifies the dataset, population, date, and percentile method.
Limits and safety
- This package specifies original Wilks. If the live tool uses another version, change the title, formula, schema, and examples together.
- Competition classifications require the governing federation's rules, not an unsourced score band.
- The formula does not account for age, equipment, judging, or drug-testing status.

Inputs, outputs and result meaning
Calculates original Wilks score, original Wilks coefficient, total used, and target-score total from formula sex category, total entry, bodyweight, and powerlifting total with visible method, validation, precision, and limitations.
Inputs
- Formula sex category
- Uses the published sex-specific coefficient set. Available choices are Men and Women.
- Total entry
- Use one total or enter the three best successful lifts. Available choices are Enter combined total and Add three lifts.
- Bodyweight
- Supported units include kilograms (kg) and pounds (lb). The supported range is 30 through 300.
- Powerlifting total
- Supported units include kilograms (kg) and pounds (lb). The supported range is 0.01 through 2,000.
- Squat
- Supported units include kilograms (kg) and pounds (lb). The supported range is 0.01 through 2,000.
- Bench press
- Supported units include kilograms (kg) and pounds (lb). The supported range is 0.01 through 2,000.
- Deadlift
- Supported units include kilograms (kg) and pounds (lb). The supported range is 0.01 through 2,000.
- Target score (optional)
- Shows the total required at the entered bodyweight. Supported units include pts. The supported range is 0 through 1,000. This field is optional.
Outputs
- Original Wilks score
- This is the primary result. It is displayed in pts. The visible value uses up to 2 decimal places according to the output rule.
- Original Wilks coefficient
- The visible value uses up to 8 decimal places according to the output rule.
- Total used
- The visible value uses up to 2 decimal places according to the output rule.
- Target-score total
- The visible value uses up to 2 decimal places according to the output rule.
Full-precision calculation, one unit normalization, final display rounding. Keep the result label, unit, selected mode, and stated limitations together when sharing the answer.
Frequently asked questions
Is Wilks still used
It remains a familiar comparison metric, but federations may use DOTS, IPF GL, Wilks 2020, or another system.
Is Wilks the same as DOTS
No. The coefficients and resulting scores differ.
Can I use pounds
Yes only when the calculator converts both bodyweight and total to kilograms before applying the polynomial.
What is a good Wilks score
There is no context-free threshold. A responsible answer needs a defined population, division, equipment class, and dataset.
