CDC describes BMI as a low-cost screen and emphasizes that it is only one part of assessment. It can be useful even though it does not directly measure fat. Body-fat estimates add composition context but bring method uncertainty. Waist adds different information because total body-fat percentage does not show where fat is stored.
Worked scenario
A resistance-trained person may have a high BMI because of lean mass. A circumference or professional assessment may add context. Another person can have BMI inside a standard range but a larger waist or higher estimated body fat. Neither example should be diagnosed from an online tool.
