Accuracy, precision, and repeatability
- Accuracy asks how close an estimate is to an appropriate reference method.
- Precision asks how tightly repeated readings agree.
- Repeatability asks whether the protocol can be reproduced.
A result displayed to one decimal place is not necessarily accurate to one decimal place.

No method should be described as error-free. Even laboratory methods require calibration and protocols.
Why methods disagree
They use different inputs and samples. A muscular person may receive a higher BMI-derived estimate than a circumference equation. Hydration can change BIA while tape readings remain stable. Averaging unlike methods does not create a validated result.
Reduce avoidable error
Keep the method and device the same; record raw inputs; standardize time, hydration, food, exercise, and clothing; repeat tape readings; and compare multi-week trends. If a result moves from 24.1% to 23.8%, the difference may be smaller than practical noise.
When greater accuracy matters
Consider a professionally administered method when the number informs medical care, research, eating-disorder treatment, eligibility, or a high-stakes performance decision.
