U.S. Navy vs BMI Body Fat Methods

The Navy method uses body dimensions; the BMI-based method uses weight relative to height plus age and sex. Neither directly measures tissue.

The Navy method can distinguish people with the same height and weight but different circumferences. The BMI method needs common inputs but inherits BMI's inability to distinguish fat, muscle, and bone.

When results disagree

Do not average them. Check units, formula version, waist site, neck measurement, and sex coding. Repeat the tape method, then choose one method for future trends. If the result affects a clinical or official decision, use the method required by the responsible authority.

Method labels matter

An equation should be named for its documented source. CalculatorGeek must replace the live “American Diabetes Association” label unless the exact source proves that attribution.

Worked comparison

A 30-year-old male with BMI 25 receives 20.7% from the adult Deurenberg-style equation. A Navy result for the same person additionally depends on height, neck, and waist, so its direction cannot be known from BMI alone.
