Window Replacement Cost Calculator
Use this window replacement cost calculator to total a project from your window counts and quoted prices. Group similar windows, separate product and installation charges, and include removal, finishing, permits and tax. Compare the known project price with a separate contingency reserve instead of relying on one generic cost per window.

Group the windows you are replacing
Create a row for each group with the same size, style and installation scope. Eight standard windows and two large custom units should normally be separate groups because their quoted product and labor costs can differ.
Enter the number of windows, product price per unit, installation price per unit and removal cost per unit. For a bay, bow or multi-window assembly, use the contractor’s stated billing unit consistently. Do not count the assembly once in one quote and each component separately in another without reconciling the totals.
If the quote gives an installed price that already includes the product, labor and removal, use the installed-package option. Mark any included charges rather than adding them again. Add separate amounts only for exclusions such as trim, finish work, repairs or permits.
Identify the installation scope
Confirm whether the quote is for an insert-style replacement, a full-frame replacement or work that changes the opening. Those scopes can require different labor and finishing. Pella’s replacement-cost guide distinguishes material, configuration and installation requirements rather than treating every window as the same project.
Note who is responsible for interior trim, exterior finishing, painting, disposal and repairs discovered after removal. Put a known repair into its own cost row. Use a contingency reserve for unresolved uncertainty rather than disguising a guess as a contractor quote.
How the cost calculation works
For each group in itemized mode:
Group cost = quantity × (product price + installation price + removal price).
Add the groups and separate project charges to obtain the pretax subtotal. Enter the tax amount from the quote or a verified estimate. This produces the quoted project cost. The calculator then shows your selected contingency percentage of the pretax subtotal as a separate planning reserve.
Immediate confirmed incentives reduce the cash budget. Reimbursements expected later are listed separately because you may need to pay the contractor before receiving them. The calculator does not decide eligibility or invent a local rebate.
Worked example: two window groups
The following inputs are illustrative, not a local price estimate:
| Group | Entered per-unit costs | Group total |
|---|---|---|
| Eight standard windows | $450 product + $250 labor + $50 removal | $6,000 |
| Two larger windows | $900 product + $400 labor + $75 removal | $2,750 |
| Permit and separate trim work | $200 + $500 | $700 |
| Pretax project subtotal | $9,450 |
With $324 entered tax, the quoted cost is $9,774. A 10% reserve on the pretax subtotal adds $945, making the planning budget $10,719. The budget averages $1,071.90 across the ten counted windows, but the underlying groups clearly cost different amounts.
If a confirmed $500 reimbursement arrives after installation, the eventual net planning budget becomes $10,219. The cash needed before that reimbursement remains $10,719 unless another funding source covers the timing gap.
Price and energy performance answer different questions
A more expensive window does not automatically produce enough utility savings to recover its cost. DOE’s window purchasing guidance explains that climate, U-factor and solar heat gain coefficient affect energy performance. This budget tool does not estimate your home’s heating or cooling savings from purchase price alone.
Comfort, operation, water management, maintenance and appearance may also affect your decision. Compare the specified product and installation scope, then assess performance separately. Do not subtract a guessed home-value increase from the amount you need to fund.
For new 2026 installations, the former federal energy-efficient home-improvement credit is not automatically included. IRS guidance limits the credit to qualifying improvements through 2025.
If you plan to borrow, use the personal loan cost calculator or the HELOC payment calculator to compare payments and repayment costs after establishing the project budget.
Frequently asked questions
Is the average cost per window a quote for another window?
No. It is the total selected budget divided by the number of units you entered. A different size, configuration or installation condition may have a different price.
Should I replace every window at once?
This calculator can compare phased and full-project quotes, but it does not assume a volume discount. Enter separate documented offers, including repeat setup or permit charges when applicable.
How should hidden damage be handled?
Include known quoted repairs directly. Keep unresolved work in a labeled allowance or reserve, and ask the contractor how additional scope will be approved and priced.
Does the calculator measure openings or confirm product fit?
No. Use verified measurements and the product quantities from your contractor or supplier. The result is a financial worksheet, not an ordering or installation specification.
Enter each window group and its installation scope, then compare totals that include the same work and clearly identify uncertainty.
