What to enter from your solar quote

Start with the proposed system’s DC capacity in kilowatts, not its annual electricity production. An 8 kW array describes generating capacity; its yearly output is a separate number measured in kilowatt-hours. A production model such as PVWatts uses location and system characteristics to estimate generation.

Choose either the installer’s total base price or a quoted price per watt. Do not enter both as additional charges. Then identify what that price includes: panels, inverter, mounting equipment, labor, electrical work, permits and interconnection.

Add only costs excluded from the base quote. Examples might include a service-panel upgrade, roof work, a battery, trenching or an additional permit fee. A line marked “included” contributes zero additional dollars, making it easier to compare a bundled quote with an itemized offer.

Enter tax from the written quote or a verified estimate. The calculator does not assume which equipment or labor is taxable in your jurisdiction. Finally, select a contingency percentage for uncertain work. A reserve is money you set aside, not a charge the installer has necessarily quoted.

How the solar cost calculation works

When you use a price-per-watt quote:

Base solar price = system kW × 1,000 × quoted dollars per watt.

The base price plus excluded extras gives the pretax project subtotal. Adding entered tax produces the quoted project cost. Your selected contingency applies to the pretax subtotal, and the result is shown separately before being added to the planning budget.

An incentive available at purchase reduces immediate cash required. A reimbursement expected later reduces the eventual net budget, but does not reduce the amount needed at installation. This timing difference matters if you are arranging financing or deciding how much cash to keep available.

Example: an 8 kW solar project

The following numbers illustrate the method; they are not current market prices.

    ItemEntered amount
    8,000 watts at $3 per watt$24,000
Additional work excluded from the base price$2,500
    Tax shown in the quote$1,800
    Contingency: 10% of the $26,500 pretax subtotal$2,650
    Total planning budget$30,950

A confirmed $1,000 purchase-time rebate would reduce the immediate planning budget to $29,950. If a separate $2,000 reimbursement arrives later, the eventual net budget becomes $27,950. The contractor’s price before the reserve is $28,300; the reserve should not be mistaken for a guaranteed expense.

The base system price is $3 per watt. Dividing the full planning budget by capacity produces about $3.87 per watt, but that figure includes extras, tax and reserve. Compare quotes using the same cost basis.

    Incentives for a 2026 installation

The IRS Form 5695 instructions end new residential clean energy credits after December 31, 2025. This calculator therefore does not automatically subtract a 30% federal credit from a new 2026 project. Enter another incentive only after checking its eligibility, funding and payment timing. A carryforward from an older installation is a separate tax matter.

Compare the project before choosing financing

A lower quoted price is useful only when the scope is comparable. Check equipment quantities, required electrical work, roof assumptions, removal costs, payment milestones and written warranty coverage. Keep the cash price visible even when an installer emphasizes monthly payments.

Use the personal loan cost calculator to compare financing fees and repayment costs. A HELOC payment calculation can illustrate a different borrowing structure, including changes between draw and repayment periods.

    Frequently asked questions

Can this calculator size a system from my electric bill?

No. A dollar bill combines usage, tariffs and fixed charges. Obtain a design and production estimate appropriate to your roof and electricity use, then enter that system’s capacity and quote.

Can I estimate solar cost from house square footage alone?

Not reliably. A 1,500- or 2,000-square-foot home can have very different electricity use, roof geometry, shading, local labor, interconnection work and equipment scope. Use square footage only as background information; price the system capacity and written installation scope actually proposed for the property.

Should a battery be included in dollars per watt?

Show it separately. Batteries are commonly described by stored energy and power capability, so adding their price to a panel-only comparison can obscure which part of the proposal costs more.

Should I subtract an unapproved rebate?

Keep it out of the committed budget. You can compare a separate incentive scenario, but confirm approval and timing before relying on it to fund installation.

Does the result show whether solar will save money?

It shows purchase costs and funding needs. Savings also depend on production, self-consumption, export compensation, maintenance and time. A low purchase price alone does not establish payback.

Enter your written quote, check every included item, and calculate the cash budget you can compare with another installer’s proposal.
