Choose the correct shape

Use rectangle for ordinary rooms, triangle for three-sided sections, circle for round areas and trapezoid for two parallel sides. For L-shapes or irregular plans, split the area into non-overlapping sections and keep each line item visible.

Formula and unit handling

Rectangle A = L x W; triangle A = b x h/2; circle A = πr²; trapezoid A = (a+b)h/2. Convert inches, yards, meters or centimeters to a consistent base unit before calculating. Convert the final area only after the geometry step.

Multiple rooms and openings

Name each room or surface, calculate its area and sum the list. For walls, subtract doors and windows only when the material estimate requires it. For property, appraisal or legal area, follow the governing measurement standard instead of a casual room total.

Waste, boxes and cost

Apply waste after raw area. Flooring pattern, tile size, cuts, defects and replacement stock influence the allowance. Boxes must be rounded up to whole packages using actual coverage per box. Price estimates exclude labor, underlayment, trim, tax and other items unless entered.
