What is calculated

Your waste-adjusted lumber order is the displayed result.

Legacy behavior retained

mixed dimension units, quantity, price per board foot, share-ready outputs.

Important limitation

Rebuilt from the live implementation and premium package. Project-specific assumptions remain editable and visible.

Result actions

How to use the calculator

Enter actual thickness, width, length and quantity for each piece or group. Use a mixed tally when dimensions differ. Add waste and price only after the raw volume is calculated, and keep the raw total visible beside the adjusted order total.

Actual, nominal and rough dimensions

Board-foot arithmetic uses dimensions, but purchasing conventions vary. A nominal 2 x 6 may have smaller surfaced dimensions, while rough lumber sold by the board foot may use measured or stated rough size. Ask the supplier which dimensions govern pricing; do not silently substitute nominal or dressed dimensions.

Quarter thickness

Hardwood thickness is often expressed in quarters: 4/4 is nominally 1 inch rough, 5/4 is 1.25 inches and 8/4 is 2 inches. Surfacing reduces finished thickness. Convert the quoted thickness basis before calculating and preserve the supplier's sales convention.

Ordering, waste and cost

Waste depends on defects, grain matching, cut layout and project complexity. Show raw board feet, user-entered waste percentage, adjusted board feet, rate per board foot and estimated material cost. Round purchasing quantities according to supplier policy, not an arbitrary universal rule.

Formula, precision and QA disclosure

CalculatorGeek normalizes units before applying the named formula, retains working precision through intermediate steps and rounds the displayed result once. Inputs outside the supported domain must return a clear no-result or warning state; they must not be silently forced into a plausible-looking answer.

Frequently asked questions

What is one board foot?

144 cubic inches, such as a board 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide and 12 inches long.

Is a board foot the same as a square foot?

No. Board foot measures volume; square foot measures area.

Do I use nominal or actual dimensions?

Use the dimension basis your supplier uses for board-foot pricing and label it.

How do I add quantity?

Multiply board feet per piece by the number of identical pieces.

How much waste should I add?

Use a project-specific allowance based on defects and cutting, not a universal percentage.
