Review method

Independently recompute distance-weighted half pacing and verify the final checkpoint, unit normalization, ceiling behavior, and invalid stopped-time boundary.

Known limitations

  • The model does not infer hill, wind, heat, altitude, surface, fatigue, congestion, or GPS error.
  • A two-half strategy cannot replace course-specific segment planning.
  • Stopped time is spread proportionally because exact stop locations are not entered.
  • Carbohydrate and hydration entries are scheduling assumptions, not prescriptions.
  • Practice pacing and fueling in training and seek qualified guidance for medical or nutrition concerns.

Direct answer

The running race planner turns a target elapsed time into a complete checkpoint plan while preserving the finish time exactly.

Choose an even, negative, or positive split; subtract planned stopped time from the pace calculation; and review moving time, elapsed time, gun-time delay, carbohydrate quantity, and reminders separately.

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter official distance and target chip time.
  2. Choose even, negative, or positive pacing and set the checkpoint interval.
  3. Separate planned stops and start-line delay.
  4. Enter only fuel and reminder targets already appropriate for your plan.
  5. Audit the final checkpoint and use the table during course planning.

Inputs, outputs, and result meaning

Inputs

  • Race distance: Enter the official or measured race distance.
  • Goal hours: Whole-hour part of the target chip elapsed time.
  • Goal minutes: Minute remainder of the target chip elapsed time.
  • Goal seconds: Second remainder of the target chip elapsed time.
  • Pacing strategy: Select how second-half pace changes relative to first-half pace.
  • Second-half pace change: For negative or positive splits, set the relative second-half pace change.
  • Checkpoint interval: Choose the spacing used to generate checkpoint rows.
  • Planned stopped time: Total time expected at aid stations, toilets, transitions, or planned stops.
  • Start-line delay: Expected difference between the gun and crossing the start line.
  • Carbohydrate target: Enter a practiced target; this calculator schedules it but does not prescribe it.
  • Carbohydrate per serving: Enter grams in one gel, drink portion, chew serving, or food portion.
  • Hydration reminder interval: Set zero to disable reminders; the interval is not a volume prescription.

Outputs

  • Goal elapsed time: The entered chip-time goal.
  • Moving time: Goal time after planned stopped time is removed.
  • Average pace per km: Moving-time average in minutes per kilometer.
  • Average pace per mile: The same moving-time average per mile.
  • Gun-clock finish: Goal elapsed time plus start-line delay.
  • Total carbohydrate target: User-selected grams per hour multiplied by goal hours.
  • Fuel servings: Target grams divided by grams per serving, rounded up.
  • Hydration reminders: Whole reminder intervals within the goal time.

Formula and methodology

Moving time: goal elapsed seconds minus planned stopped seconds.

Even split: moving time divided by distance.

Negative split: second-half pace is the selected percentage faster than first-half pace; both half paces are solved together so their total still equals moving time. Positive split reverses that relationship.

Checkpoint elapsed time: cumulative moving time plus the proportional share of planned stopped time. Gun-clock finish adds the start-line delay only once.

Worked examples

Four-hour marathon

A 42.195 km race in 14,400 seconds has an even moving pace of about 341.27 seconds per kilometer, or 5:41/km. A ten-minute start delay changes the gun-clock finish to 4:10:00 but does not change chip pace.

Two minutes of stops in a 1:45 half marathon

The pace calculation uses 1:43:00 of moving time. Checkpoint elapsed clocks add the two stopped minutes progressively and the final row returns to 1:45:00.

Interpretation and limitations

  • The model does not infer hill, wind, heat, altitude, surface, fatigue, congestion, or GPS error.
  • A two-half strategy cannot replace course-specific segment planning.
  • Stopped time is spread proportionally because exact stop locations are not entered.
  • Carbohydrate and hydration entries are scheduling assumptions, not prescriptions.
  • Practice pacing and fueling in training and seek qualified guidance for medical or nutrition concerns.

Frequently asked questions

Does a negative split change my finish time?

No. The first- and second-half paces are solved together so their distance-weighted total remains the entered moving time.

What is the difference between chip time and gun time?

Chip time begins when you cross the start line; this planner adds the entered start delay to show a gun-clock finish separately.

Are aid-station stops included?

Yes. Enter their total as planned stopped time; the planner removes it from moving pace and adds it back to elapsed checkpoints.

Does the planner adjust for hills?

No. It deliberately avoids an unsupported universal elevation penalty. Use course knowledge to create separate segments when needed.

Is the fueling schedule a recommendation?

No. It schedules the target you enter. Test products and timing in training and personalize with a sports dietitian when appropriate.
