    What this calculator answers

The UK standard IPT rate is 12% and the higher rate is 20%, but the correct classification depends on the insurance and supply arrangement. Some contracts are exempt.

Perform current IPT arithmetic without deciding whether a contract is taxable, exempt or subject to the higher rate.

    Method and calculation order

For a pre-tax premium, IPT equals premium times rate. For a tax-inclusive premium, the calculator divides by 1 plus the rate and reports the difference.

    Worked reference example

    A 1,120 tax-inclusive premium at 12% contains 120 IPT and 1,000 premium before tax.

    How to use the result

Use the insurer or broker invoice and current HMRC classification. Ordinary motor, pet and home insurance generally use the standard rate; travel and certain insurance sold with goods can use the higher rate; exemptions exist.

    What the calculator cannot know

The calculator performs arithmetic only and does not classify contracts, locate risk, handle transitional timing, broker commission, special schemes, refunds or VAT. Rates checked 2026-10-08.

    Frequently asked questions

Is life insurance subject to IPT?

GOV.UK lists life insurance among exemptions; verify the specific contract.

Why is tax inside the quoted premium?

IPT is usually included in the price paid by the customer.
