What is calculated

A transparent calorie target and macro allocation for a selected surplus, without an experience-based muscle-gain promise.

Method

Apply the entered surplus to maintenance, allocate protein by body weight, fat by calorie percentage, and carbohydrate from remaining calories.

Important boundary

The tool cannot predict muscle gained, fat gained, “optimal” surplus, or a guaranteed timeline.

Result actions
1
Set maintenance and surplusApply the entered percentage above maintenance.2,500 × 1.10 = 2,750 kcal.
2
Allocate protein and fatUse the entered g/kg factor and calorie percentage. Both remain visible assumptions.
3
Assign the remainderCarbohydrate receives calories left after protein and fat.Impossible allocations are rejected.

Interpretation

kcal/day is the selected maintenance-plus-surplus target.

Protein, fat, and carbohydrate come from explicit user assumptions.

No muscle-versus-fat outcome is predicted.

Recorded method

Verify surplus calculation, metric-imperial protein parity, calorie conservation, remainder constraint, per-meal division, and invalid allocations.

These records describe the published model and reference tests. A test-case count is not a certification of every possible input or an independent specialist review. Editorial policy

Known limitations

  • No calculation can guarantee that a surplus becomes muscle rather than fat.
  • Training quality, sleep, prior experience, genetics, and adherence are not converted into a tissue forecast.
  • Protein needs and fat allocation can differ with clinical and dietary context.
  • Meal outputs are even arithmetic divisions, not timing prescriptions.

What the Lean Bulk Calculator answers

Build an auditable maintenance-plus-surplus and macro plan without assigning “optimal” muscle gain from training experience.

The calculator lets the user control surplus percentage, protein grams per kilogram, and fat percentage, then validates that a positive carbohydrate remainder exists.

How to use the Lean Bulk Calculator

  1. Enter estimated or calibrated maintenance calories.
  2. Choose the surplus percentage to model.
  3. Enter body weight and a selected protein factor.
  4. Choose the fat share, then inspect carbohydrate as the remainder and revise impossible allocations.

Formula, variables and calculation order

target = maintenance × (1 + surplus% / 100).

protein g = weight kg × selected g/kg; fat g = target × fat% / 100 / 9; carbohydrate g = (target - protein g × 4 - fat calories) / 4.

The calculator does not infer surplus or protein from a self-reported experience label.

Worked examples and boundary checks

2,500 maintenance, 10% surplus, 80 kg

Target is 2,750 kcal. At 1.6 g/kg protein, protein is 128 g (512 kcal). At 25% fat, fat is 76.4 g (687.5 kcal). Remaining carbohydrate is 387.6 g.

Boundary check

If the selected protein and fat allocations consume all target calories, the combination is rejected instead of displaying negative carbohydrate.

How to interpret the result

The output is a plan assembled from visible inputs. It does not establish that the surplus is necessary, optimal, or destined for lean tissue.

Inputs, outputs and result meaning

Makes surplus, protein factor, and fat share editable; calculates carbohydrate as a validated remainder; and excludes training-stage tissue promises.

Frequently asked questions

Does this predict muscle gain?

No. It calculates calorie and macro assumptions and does not predict how body tissue will change.

Why not choose surplus by experience level?

Training experience cannot be translated reliably into one automatic surplus for every person, so the percentage remains user controlled.

Is 1.6 g/kg required?

No. It is the editable default used for the worked example, not an individualized requirement.

Why is carbohydrate the remainder?

The selected protein and fat allocations are applied first; remaining target calories are divided by 4 kcal/g.

Are per-meal grams required?

No. They are only an even arithmetic split for planning convenience.

Primary sources and evidence limits

Sources were checked 2026-10-04. They support the named equation, reference range, label arithmetic, or evidence boundary; they do not convert an estimate into individualized medical nutrition advice.
