Weight Loss Timeline and the 3,500-Calorie Rule

On this page

The familiar shortcut treats about 3,500 kcal as one pound, or about 7,700 kcal as one kilogram. It can translate a planned energy gap into a rough initial timeline, but weight change does not remain linear.

The Calorie Deficit Calculator uses linear goal-date arithmetic and should label it accordingly.

Linear example

A planned 500-kcal daily deficit creates 3,500 kcal over seven days. The shortcut would predict about 1 lb per week. That is arithmetic, not a guarantee.

Why the model drifts

As weight changes, resting expenditure and the energy cost of movement can change. Appetite, spontaneous activity, adherence, water, and glycogen also vary. The NIDDK Body Weight Planner uses a dynamic mathematical model to account for changing energy requirements.

Best use of the shortcut

Use it to screen whether a target date is plainly aggressive and to create an initial plan. Do not extrapolate it as an exact promise for months. Re-estimate from observed trends and changing weight.
