Weight Loss Plateau Guide

On this page

A plateau is a sustained lack of trend change, not two or three flat weigh-ins. Confirm the pattern before cutting calories.

Compare the original Calorie Deficit Calculator inputs with current weight and activity.

Plateau checklist

  1. Compare at least two to four weeks of consistent data when appropriate.
  2. Check whether water retention, sodium, menstrual-cycle changes, constipation, travel, or new training could mask change.
  3. Audit portions, beverages, cooking fats, weekend intake, and unlogged bites.
  4. Review whether normal steps or training decreased.
  5. Recalculate at current weight.
  6. Make one modest change and reassess.

Why plateaus happen

Energy needs can decline with lower body weight, adherence can drift, and activity can fall unintentionally. The original target was an estimate, not a measured maintenance value.

What not to do

Do not respond with an extreme restriction, punitive exercise, or multiple simultaneous changes. These make the cause harder to identify and can harm recovery and adherence.

Use How to Recalculate Calories During Weight Loss for the calibration process. Seek professional care when symptoms, disordered eating, medication, or medical conditions are involved.
