How Much Protein Do I Need Per Day?

On this page

Multiply body weight in kilograms by a factor that matches the guidance context. There is no single factor for every adult and goal.

Use the Protein Calculator to perform the arithmetic, then verify which range the result represents.

Common evidence contexts

ContextDaily amount
Longstanding adult RDA baseline0.8 g/kg
US Dietary Guidelines 2025–2030 target1.2–1.6 g/kg
Most exercising adults in ISSN position stand1.4–2.0 g/kg

For 60 kg, those calculations are 48 g, 72–96 g, and 84–120 g respectively. For 80 kg, they are 64 g, 96–128 g, and 112–160 g.

Why recommendations differ

The RDA is a population allowance framework. A public dietary target can reflect current policy priorities. Sports position stands address training and muscle adaptation. These are different questions, not three calculators proving each other wrong.

Factors that change the choice

Training, age, energy deficit, injury or illness, total energy intake, body size, dietary pattern, and clinical conditions can affect protein planning. Simple equations do not assess kidney function or nutrition status.

Use current or goal weight?

Most public formulas use current weight. At a higher body weight, a clinician may choose adjusted or goal weight to avoid an implausibly high target. The chosen weight basis must be explicit.
