Home Contents Inventory & Coverage Gap Method, Formula & Examples

On this page

This method guide explains the calculation sequence behind the Home Contents Inventory & Coverage Gap Calculator. It owns formulas, input definitions, timing, rounding and reference checks; the calculator remains the only page that performs the numeric scenario.

Calculation sequence

Category replacement values are summed without guessing regional prices. The policy-limit gap and ratio are calculated separately from an optional depreciation scenario and high-value-item sublimit check.

Inputs and evidence

Use current written documents for every material input. The calculator supports: Market and currency, Living and dining, Kitchen and appliances, Bedrooms and clothing, Electronics, Jewelry, art and collectibles, Tools, sports and hobby equipment, Home office, Garage and outdoor contents, Other contents, Policy contents limit, Applicable high-value sublimit, Illustrative average depreciation for ACV.

Reference example

Nine categories of 10,000 each total 90,000. A 75,000 contents limit leaves a 15,000 aggregate gap; a 5,000 jewelry sublimit against 10,000 entered creates a separate 5,000 sublimit gap.

Boundary and error checks

Test zero-rate branches where available, minimum and maximum supported inputs, and a scenario in which the main result reverses. Reject blank, non-finite or out-of-range values rather than silently substituting them.

Model boundary

This is not a rebuilding-cost model or claim settlement. It does not determine policy eligibility, valuation wording, pair-and-set treatment, depreciation by item, taxes, debris removal or local price inflation.

Sources and review status

Sources and model boundaries checked 2026-10-08. This new opportunity-map expansion has automated formula, fixture and source QA but has not been represented as human editorial review. Keep the route noindex until CalculatorGeek records a completed YMYL editorial review.
