Workers’ Compensation by Jurisdiction: US, UK, Canada and Australia
On this page
All four markets protect workers after employment-related injury or illness, but their insurance structures are not interchangeable. A payroll-rate worksheet can reconcile figures only after the user obtains the correct local policy, board or scheme inputs.
United States: state-based workers’ compensation
State law, rating bureau, carrier, class code, manual rate, experience modifier, schedule rating, payroll rules and audit process can all affect premium. Federal programs cover certain worker groups separately. Do not treat one state’s rate or rule as national.
United Kingdom: employers’ liability insurance
HSE states that most employers must carry employers’ liability insurance for employee injury or disease claims. Premium pricing is an insurer matter rather than one universal statutory workers-comp payroll tariff. Use the calculator only when the written quote supplies compatible payroll-based rates.
Canada: provincial and territorial boards
Boards set classification, insurable earnings and premium processes. Ontario WSIB uses insurable earnings × premium rate ÷ 100; WorkSafeBC uses a net premium rate multiplied by assessable payroll. Experience can already be reflected in the net rate.
Australia: state and territory schemes
WorkSafe Victoria, icare NSW and other schemes use local industry classifications, remuneration or wages, claims performance, levies and incentives. Safe Work Australia compares these arrangements but does not create one national employer premium formula.
What transfers across markets
Maintain accurate exposure records, use the applicable written rate, separate activities when required, track adjustments, reconcile estimates to actuals and retain the source/effective date for every input.
What does not transfer automatically
Legal coverage duties, exemptions, employee definitions, contractor treatment, earnings caps, classification codes, experience formulas, benefits, dispute routes, taxes and current rates remain jurisdiction-specific.
Use one arithmetic ledger with local inputs
The Workers’ Compensation Premium & Audit Calculator supports USD, GBP, CAD and AUD display. Market selection changes terminology context and currency only; it never loads jurisdictional law or rate data.
Frequently asked questions
Is UK employers’ liability the same as US workers’ compensation?
No. Both relate to employee injury or illness, but legal structure, benefits, claims and premium mechanisms differ.
Can one calculator use the same rate table for Canada and Australia?
No. Rates and classifications come from the applicable provincial, territorial, state or scheme authority.
