What is calculated

Protein, total fat, carbohydrate remainder, and a separate saturated-fat ceiling context value.

Method

Apply selected protein and fat percentages, then assign the remaining calorie share to carbohydrate using 4/4/9.

Important boundary

Mediterranean adherence depends on foods and eating patterns, not macro percentages alone.

Result actions
1
Set calories and sharesChoose daily calories, protein percentage, and total-fat percentage.2,200 kcal at 20% and 35%.
2
Assign the remainderCarbohydrate receives the remaining percentage.100 - 20 - 35 = 45%.
3
Keep quality separateUse the macro plan alongside an actual food-pattern review.Percentages alone do not measure adherence.

Interpretation

g/day is the carbohydrate remainder for the selected shares.

The saturated-fat value is separate context, not proof of food quality.

Mediterranean adherence cannot be calculated from macros alone.

Recorded method

Verify percentage remainder, 4/4/9 conversion, saturated-fat context, and invalid totals.

These records describe the published model and reference tests. A test-case count is not a certification of every possible input or an independent specialist review. Editorial policy

Known limitations

  • Macro percentages do not measure Mediterranean-pattern adherence.
  • Olive oil, nuts, fish, legumes, vegetables, fruit, and whole grains cannot be inferred from grams alone.
  • The PREDIMED trial record was corrected and republished; this tool does not convert trial findings into an individual outcome claim.
  • Clinical lipid, diabetes, allergy, and medication contexts require individualized advice.

What the Mediterranean Macro Calculator answers

Create a flexible macro scenario without misrepresenting 20/50/30 as the official Mediterranean ratio.

The calculator keeps protein and total fat editable, calculates the carbohydrate remainder, and separates a general saturated-fat ceiling from total-fat intake.

How to use the Mediterranean Macro Calculator

  1. Enter daily calories.
  2. Choose protein and total-fat shares.
  3. Review carbohydrate as the remaining percentage.
  4. Evaluate the actual food pattern separately from the macro arithmetic.

Formula, variables and calculation order

carbohydrate% = 100 - protein% - fat%.

Convert protein and carbohydrate at 4 kcal/g and fat at 9 kcal/g.

The separate saturated-fat context equals 10% of calories divided by 9 and does not describe Mediterranean adherence.

Worked example and boundary check

2,200 kcal at 20% protein and 35% fat

Carbohydrate is 45% or 247.5 g, protein is 110 g, and total fat is 85.6 g. The general 10% saturated-fat ceiling context is 24.4 g.

Boundary check

Protein and total fat cannot consume 100% or more of calories because no positive carbohydrate remainder would exist.

How to interpret the result

The result is a calorie allocation. A Mediterranean-style diet is evaluated primarily by its foods and pattern, not by one macro ratio.

Frequently asked questions

Is 20/50/30 the official Mediterranean split?

No. Mediterranean eating patterns vary and are defined by food choices more than a fixed macro ratio.

Why show saturated fat separately?

Dietary Guidelines recommend less than 10% of calories from saturated fat, while a Mediterranean pattern emphasizes unsaturated fat sources.

Does higher total fat mean the pattern is unhealthy?

Not by itself. Fat type, foods, total energy, and individual context matter.

Does this calculate olive oil servings?

No. It calculates macros, not food-group adherence.

Can the calculator predict heart benefit?

No. Population trial evidence cannot predict an individual outcome from a macro split.
