What is calculated

The signed daily calorie change and intake implied by a chosen goal weight and number of weeks.

Method

Convert the mass difference with 7,700 kcal/kg, divide by days, and add the signed change to maintenance.

Important boundary

Long-range weight change is dynamic, so this reverse calculation is a feasibility screen rather than a prescription.

Result actions
1
Set the goal and windowEnter current weight, goal weight, and weeks.90 to 80 kg in 20 weeks.
2
Convert the mass differenceApply the signed 7,700 kcal/kg energy equivalent across all days.Loss produces a negative energy change.
3
Screen the implicationAdd the signed change to maintenance and evaluate feasibility.Do not treat it as a prescription.

Interpretation

kcal/day is the signed static change from maintenance.

The selected timeline determines the size of the implied adjustment.

The result is a feasibility screen, not a guaranteed plan.

Recorded method

Verify signed direction, metric-imperial parity, timeline division, implied intake, and invalid boundaries.

These records describe the published model and reference tests. A test-case count is not a certification of every possible input or an independent specialist review. Editorial policy

Known limitations

  • The implied intake is not a recommendation.
  • Energy expenditure changes as weight, activity, and adaptation change.
  • The tool does not evaluate minimum nutrient intake or the appropriateness of the goal.
  • Large or rapid changes need professional review.

What the Goal Weight Timeline Calculator answers

Reverse-plan the static daily calorie change implied by a goal weight and a chosen number of weeks.

The signed output supports both lower and higher goal weights and exposes the implied intake and percentage change instead of hiding the arithmetic.

How to use the Goal Weight Timeline Calculator

  1. Enter current and different goal weights.
  2. Choose the planning window.
  3. Enter estimated maintenance calories.
  4. Inspect the signed adjustment and implied intake as a static feasibility screen.

Formula, variables and calculation order

mass change = goal - current.

daily energy change = mass change x 7,700 / (weeks x 7).

implied intake = maintenance + daily energy change. Negative means below maintenance; positive means above.

Worked example and boundary check

90 kg to 80 kg in 20 weeks

The signed energy change is -550 kcal/day and a 2,500 kcal maintenance estimate implies 1,950 kcal/day in the static model.

Boundary check

An unchanged goal is rejected, as is a loss scenario implying 1,000 kcal/day or less.

How to interpret the result

The result tells you what the selected timeline assumes. It does not tell you that the assumption is suitable, sustainable, or likely to remain constant.

  • The implied intake is not a recommendation.
  • Energy expenditure changes as weight, activity, and adaptation change.
  • The tool does not evaluate minimum nutrient intake or the appropriateness of the goal.
  • Large or rapid changes need professional review.

Inputs, outputs and result meaning

Supports both gain and loss, separates signed adjustment from implied intake, and rejects unchanged or extremely low-intake scenarios.

Inputs

Current body weight
Use a current measured body weight.
Goal body weight
The goal may be lower or higher, but it cannot equal current weight.
Selected time window
Choose the number of weeks to test; longer horizons increase model uncertainty.
Estimated maintenance calories
Enter the daily energy value used by this scenario.

Outputs

Required signed calorie change
Primary result in kcal/day.
Static implied daily intake
Supporting result in kcal/day.
Selected mass change
Supporting result in kg.
Static weekly mass change
Supporting result in kg/week.
Energy change relative to maintenance
Supporting result in %.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the Weight Loss Timeline Calculator?

This tool starts with a chosen time window and solves for the calorie change; the other starts with a calorie gap and solves for linear time.

Can it model weight gain?

Yes. A higher goal produces a positive signed energy change, still as static arithmetic.

Why can the result be negative?

Negative means the selected goal and timeline imply intake below the entered maintenance estimate.

Why reject very low implied intake?

The NIDDK planner uses 1,000 kcal/day as a hard lower boundary for its adult planning model; a result at or below that level is outside this calculator.

Does it account for adaptation?

No. That is why the result is labeled static and should be recalculated.

Primary sources and evidence limits

Sources were checked 2026-10-04. They support the calculation method or its evidence boundary; they do not turn a planning scenario into medical nutrition advice.
