To isolate the modeled effect of a backpack, keep body mass, speed, grade, terrain, and duration unchanged. Compare one calculation with pack load set to zero and another with the actual pack load.
Compare like with like
Changing speed, terrain, grade, or duration at the same time prevents the comparison from isolating load. Use the same route assumptions and change only the pack-load field.
Why route details still matter
Walking faster, moving uphill, and selecting a higher documented terrain factor alter both loaded and unloaded estimates. Enter representative route inputs rather than relying on a generic calories-per-mile claim.
Worked comparison
For an 80 kg person walking for one hour at 1.5 m/s on level firm ground, the equation estimates about 335 kcal with no pack and 385 kcal with a 15 kg pack. The modeled difference is about 50 kcal for those exact assumptions, not a universal percentage.
