Navy Maximum Waist by Height Chart

On this page

Use your recorded height—not raw height—to find the largest recorded half-inch waist that remains below the Navy’s Step 1 boundary. The chart reproduces Table 1 in MyNavyHR Guide-4, June 2026.

Use the Navy Body Fat Calculator when you need measurement rounding, repeated-waist handling, or Step 2.

Official Step 1 chart

All measurements are inches. The “resulting ratio” is the charted maximum waist divided by height. The next half-inch waist can reach or exceed 0.5500, so do not estimate between rows.

How to use the chart

  1. Round raw height up to the nearest half inch.
  2. Round each waist reading down to the nearest half inch and apply the repeat-reading procedure.
  3. Find the recorded height in the chart.
  4. If recorded waist is at or below the listed maximum, Step 1 should remain within the permitted ratio.
  5. If waist is above the listed maximum, calculate the exact recorded WHtR and continue to Step 2 when it is 0.5500 or higher.

Why `height × 0.55` is not the official chart

Multiplying height by 0.55 gives the mathematical boundary, not necessarily a permitted recorded half-inch. At 70 inches, 70 × 0.55 = 38.5, but 38.5 ÷ 70 equals 0.5500 and therefore requires Step 2. Guide-4 Table 1 lists 38.0 as the maximum allowed waist for 70.0 inches.

The table is designed around the recorded half-inch increments and the rule that 0.5499 passes while 0.5500 does not.

Examples

69.5-inch recorded height

The table maximum is 38.0 inches. The resulting ratio is 0.5468. A recorded waist of 38.5 inches would be above the charted maximum and must be evaluated through the exact ratio.

71-inch recorded height

The maximum listed waist is 39.0 inches, producing 0.5493. The next half inch would produce 39.5 ÷ 71 = 0.5563…, requiring Step 2.

75.5-inch recorded height

The listed maximum is 41.5 inches, with a resulting ratio of 0.5497. This is close to the boundary but remains within Step 1 after the Navy’s four-decimal round-down.

Important limitations

  • This chart resolves only Step 1.
  • Raw home measurements are not official recorded measurements.
  • A waist above the listed number does not automatically mean the entire BCA is Not Within Standards; it means Step 2 is required.
  • The chart does not replace the complete Guide-4 procedure or PRIMS.
  • Heights outside the printed range require official guidance rather than extrapolation.
