Time Conversion Tools

Convert hours, minutes, seconds, decimal time, payroll time, and elapsed durations with CalculatorGeek’s transparent time-conversion tools. Choose the calculator that matches your input and the format you need.

Time can be written as clock time, a duration, or a decimal number. These formats are related, but they are not interchangeable: 1 hour 30 minutes equals 1.50 decimal hours—not 1.30 hours. The tools below show the formula, intermediate steps, and correctly formatted result.

Core Time-Conversion Formulas

These relationships follow the standard definitions of 60 seconds in one minute and 60 minutes—3,600 seconds—in one hour. Decimal time should be calculated before display rounding so that intermediate rounding does not distort the final result.

Important: decimal hours are not clock notation

1.30 decimal hours is 1 hour 18 minutes. It is not 1 hour 30 minutes. Conversely, 1 hour 30 minutes equals 1.50 decimal hours. This distinction matters in payroll, billing, spreadsheets, and project tracking.

Common Time-Conversion Examples

Payroll Time and Rounding

For payroll calculations, first convert the actual recorded minutes to decimal hours. Any separate rounding policy—such as six-minute, tenth-hour, or quarter-hour rounding—should be applied only after the exact duration is established. Rounding rules vary by employer, contract, and jurisdiction and must not systematically undercount working time. CalculatorGeek provides mathematical conversions, not legal or employment advice.

Time-Zone Converters

Need to compare local times instead of durations? Browse the complete conversion calculator directory for EST, CST, MST, PST, UTC, GMT, IST, and other time-zone tools. Time-zone results can be affected by daylight-saving rules and regional observance, while duration conversions use fixed mathematical relationships.

Accuracy and Methodology

CalculatorGeek treats each converter as a small software application. Our Algorithmic Team verifies formulas, boundary values, fractional inputs, carry operations, formatting, and representative test cases before review. Calculations preserve full internal precision and round only the displayed result where needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the number of minutes by 60. For example, 150 ÷ 60 = 2.5 decimal hours.

Is 1.30 hours the same as 1 hour 30 minutes?

No. 1.30 decimal hours equals 1 hour 18 minutes. One hour 30 minutes equals 1.50 decimal hours.

How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?

Keep the whole hours and divide the minutes by 60, then add the two values. For 2 hours 15 minutes: 2 + (15 ÷ 60) = 2.25 hours.

Can a duration be longer than 24 hours?

Yes. A duration is an elapsed quantity and can exceed 24 hours. Clock time normally cycles after 24 hours, so spreadsheets may require a duration format such as [h]:mm.

Are payroll rounding rules universal?

No. Payroll and timekeeping rules vary by jurisdiction, employer, and contract. Use exact mathematical time for calculation and confirm any rounding policy with an appropriate payroll or legal authority.
