Interpretation

The lowest benchmark is useful for thresholds, but every ability still has its own value.

The two CRS language totals show factor points only, not the full CRS score.

A passed language threshold does not establish complete immigration eligibility.

Recorded method

Every published IRCC boundary for IELTS General, CELPIP-General, PTE Core, TEF Canada, and TCF Canada was transcribed into mirrored model tables and checked at lower and upper thresholds.

These records describe the published model and reference tests. A test-case count is not a certification of every possible input or an independent specialist review. Editorial policy

Known limitations

  • The lowest benchmark is not an average and does not replace the four individual values.
  • A language-only program screen does not decide full Express Entry eligibility.
  • TEF and TCF certificate fields must match the current IRCC table labels and score scale.

What the IELTS to CLB Calculator calculates

This calculator converts listening, reading, writing, and speaking scores from IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General, PTE Core, TEF Canada, or TCF Canada to the current CLB or NCLC equivalents. It displays every ability, the lowest benchmark, and the first-language CRS factor points for both spouse paths.

The conversion is table-based. An overall IELTS band or average is not a substitute for the four individual results.

How to use this calculator

  1. Select the exact approved test named on the score report.
  2. Enter listening, reading, writing, and speaking on that test scale.
  3. Mark whether the result is still within the IRCC validity period.
  4. Optionally select a program language screen, then use the four converted levels in the relevant application or CRS calculation.

Method and formula

For each ability, the raw score is compared with the lower and upper limits in the selected IRCC equivalency table. The highest satisfied benchmark is returned, with values above CLB/NCLC 10 capped for CRS factor scoring and values below CLB/NCLC 4 identified separately.

The optional program indicator checks only the selected numerical language minimum. Test validity is reported as a separate result because an expired score can satisfy a historical threshold but cannot support a current Express Entry submission. The tool intentionally does not infer education, work, settlement funds, occupation, admissibility, or any other eligibility rule.

Worked example

IELTS General scores of 8.0 listening, 6.0 reading, 6.0 writing, and 6.0 speaking convert to CLB 9 for listening and CLB 7 for the other three abilities. The lowest benchmark is CLB 7; averaging the four IELTS bands would hide that distinction.

How to interpret the result

Use the four ability values wherever IRCC asks for a language benchmark. โ€œCLB 9โ€ normally means every required English ability reaches CLB 9, not that the average reaches 9. French results are reported as NCLC but use the same numbered benchmark scale in the relevant CRS tables.

Assumptions and limitations

This tool does not accept IELTS Academic or IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry. It does not verify the score report, test date, identity, certificate field selected for TEF/TCF, or full program eligibility. Always compare the boundaries with the live IRCC table before submission.

Inputs, outputs and result meaning

Supports all five current Express Entry test families, exposes every ability and boundary, flags validity, and hands the converted values directly to the CRS workflow.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use IELTS Academic for Express Entry?

No. The cited IRCC equivalency table uses IELTS General Training.

Does IRCC average the four scores?

No. Listening, reading, writing, and speaking convert separately.

What is the difference between CLB and NCLC?

CLB is the English benchmark and NCLC is the French benchmark. Both use numbered levels.

Does PTE Core count for Express Entry?

Yes, when it is the approved PTE Core test and the score is converted with the current IRCC table.

Does CLB 9 guarantee an invitation?

No. Language is only part of program eligibility and CRS ranking.
