Percentages are ratios scaled to 100, but the denominator changes with the question. Percent change uses the initial value; percentage error uses an accepted reference; percentage difference uses the average magnitude of two peer values; percentage points subtract two rates directly. Naming that denominator is the fastest way to prevent a plausible-looking but incorrect answer.

Are percentage points the same as percent change?

No. Moving from 20% to 25% is 5 percentage points and a 25% relative increase.

Can a percentage exceed 100%?

Yes. A part can exceed the whole, a goal can be surpassed, or a new value can be more than double its baseline.

Why do two calculators give different answers?
