How to Read a Life Insurance Illustration
On this page
How to Read a Life Insurance Illustration is a document-and-decision question, not just a number. Use the Whole Life Insurance Illustration Comparator for arithmetic, then use this guide to compare scope, assumptions, risks and the controlling paperwork.
Short answer
This comparator does not invent a whole-life quote. It keeps guaranteed and current non-guaranteed columns separate and requires net cash surrender values so surrender charges and policy loans are not deducted twice.
Request the complete basic or in-force illustration, verify premium duration, dividend option, loan rate, lapse risk, surrender values and which values are guaranteed. Compare policies only at the same ages, years and premium pattern.
Documents and inputs
Collect the current statement, policy declarations, illustration, valuation, offer or disclosure that controls each input. The most useful evidence is dated, identifies the jurisdiction and distinguishes cash paid now from amounts financed, deducted or merely illustrated.
- Selected policy year: Use one row from the basic or in-force illustration.
- Cumulative premiums through selected year: Copy or total the premiums through the selected year.
- Guaranteed net cash surrender value: Copy the amount available on surrender after surrender charges and policy loans or loan interest shown in that value; do not copy an accumulation or account value.
- Current illustrated net cash surrender value: Copy the non-guaranteed net surrender value for the same year, after any deductions already reflected by the illustration.
- Guaranteed death benefit before policy loan: Use the pre-loan guaranteed death benefit only when the illustration does not already show a net death benefit.
- Current illustrated death benefit before policy loan: Use the pre-loan non-guaranteed death benefit only when the illustration does not already show a net death benefit.
Worked boundary example
At year ten, a 24,000 guaranteed net cash surrender value against 50,000 cumulative premiums produces a 26,000 shortfall. A 250,000 pre-loan guaranteed death benefit less a 5,000 policy loan produces a 245,000 modeled net death benefit.
Change only one input at a time when testing sensitivity. That makes it possible to explain whether a change came from rate, term, valuation, limits, fees, a deductible or a non-guaranteed assumption.
Compare like with like
Keep the same date, currency, principal or exposure, comparison horizon and benefit scope. A payment comparison is incomplete without total scheduled cost and remaining balance; an insurance comparison is incomplete without limits, deductibles, exclusions and whether a displayed value is guaranteed.
Save the base case and an adverse case. Record which result changed, by how much, and which source input caused it.
Risks and false precision
Use only net cash surrender values from the illustration. If the document shows only account or accumulation value, obtain the applicable surrender charge, policy-loan treatment and net value from the insurer before using this comparator. The worksheet does not price insurance, calculate IRR from cash-flow timing, project dividends, test solvency, determine tax, model a modified endowment contract, approve a replacement or guarantee that illustrated values will occur.
Do not backsolve a desired answer by changing undocumented assumptions. Round only for display, and expect lender, insurer or contract calculations to differ because of timing, daily interest, policy terms, valuation methods or eligibility rules.
Practical next steps
- Copy the inputs from current documents.
- Run the documented base case.
- Run one higher-cost or lower-benefit case.
- Compare the result with the official quote, schedule or illustration.
- Write down unresolved questions.
- Ask the responsible lender, insurer, regulator, tax professional, surveyor or adviser before acting.
Questions to ask
- Are current illustrated values guaranteed?
- Which cash-value column should I enter?
- Which inputs can change before completion or renewal?
- Which fees, exclusions, policy limits or lender overlays are missing?
- What written document will control if this estimate differs?
