Australia Private Health Rebate, MLS & LHC 2026–27 Method, Formula & Examples
On this page
This method guide explains the calculation sequence behind the Australia Private Health Rebate, MLS & LHC Calculator 2026–27. It owns formulas, input definitions, timing, rounding and reference checks; the calculator remains the only page that performs the numeric scenario.
Calculation sequence
The 2026–27 income thresholds select a tier. Age and tier select the published rebate percentage; MLS applies only when the user marks no approved hospital cover. Simplified LHC uses 2% per starting age year over 30, capped at 70%.
Inputs and evidence
Use current written documents for every material input. The calculator supports: Jurisdiction and currency, MLS/rebate family status, Income for MLS and rebate purposes, Dependent children after the first, Age of insured adult, Annual base hospital premium, Approved hospital cover for MLS, Age when hospital cover started.
Reference example
A single person aged 40 with 120,000 MLS income is Tier 1. The under-65 rebate is 16.079%; without approved cover, the modeled MLS is 1% of income.
Boundary and error checks
Test zero-rate branches where available, minimum and maximum supported inputs, and a scenario in which the main result reverses. Reject blank, non-finite or out-of-range values rather than silently substituting them.
Model boundary
Specific to 2026–27 thresholds and rebate percentages checked 2026-10-08. The LHC calculation is simplified and excludes permitted days, overseas and migration rules, ten-year removal and couples averaging. The ATO and insurer determine outcomes.
