What this result means

This checker converts a paracetamol amount that is already confirmed on the label or by a pharmacist or clinician; it does not choose a dose for a child.

Method used

Dose in mg equals weight in kg multiplied by the selected label-confirmed mg/kg amount; volume equals dose divided by bottle mg/mL.

Important boundary

Recheck the child, single ingredient, printed concentration, amount, interval and daily maximum. This result is not a prescription.

Interpretation

For 20 kg, 15 mg/kg and 120 mg per 5 mL, the result is 300 mg or 12.5 mL.

Dose in mg equals weight in kg multiplied by the selected label-confirmed mg/kg amount; volume equals dose divided by bottle mg/mL.

Known limitations

  • The calculator does not select a dose, dosing interval or number of doses.
  • Brand name does not establish concentration.
  • Suspected overdose or duplicate exposure needs urgent expert advice.

Convert a confirmed paracetamol amount into milligrams and millilitres

This checker converts a paracetamol amount that is already confirmed on the label or by a pharmacist or clinician; it does not choose a dose for a child.

Select the exact strength printed on the single-ingredient bottle. Crocin, Dolo and Calpol are brand families rather than guaranteed concentrations, so the calculator never infers strength from brand name alone.

How to use the Pediatric Paracetamol Dose and Syrup Strength Checker

  1. Weigh the child and enter the current weight in kilograms.
  2. Enter completed age in months.
  3. Choose only the milligrams-per-kilogram amount already supplied by the current label, pharmacist or clinician.
  4. Match the printed mg per 5 mL strength, or enter it manually.
  5. Confirm that the medicine contains paracetamol only and review every other medicine for duplicate paracetamol.

Use an oral syringe marked in millilitres. Do not use a kitchen spoon.

Method and calculation

Selected single dose (mg) = Current child weight (kg) × Label-confirmed amount per kg (mg/kg). Measured liquid volume (mL) = Selected single dose ÷ (Paracetamol strength on bottle ÷ 5).

The result also displays 10 mg/kg and 15 mg/kg arithmetic boundaries and a 60 mg/kg 24-hour arithmetic ceiling. Those values are guardrails, not permission to exceed the product label, combine products, shorten the stated interval or give another dose after vomiting.

Worked example

A child weighing 20 kg with a confirmed 15 mg/kg amount has a 300 mg Selected single dose. If the bottle says 120 mg per 5 mL, it contains 24 mg/mL, so the Measured liquid volume is 12.5 mL. A 250 mg per 5 mL bottle would produce a different volume for the same milligram amount. This is why the exact bottle concentration matters.

Inputs, outputs and result meaning

The shared CalculatorGeek renderer keeps entered values, calculated results, copied text, printed output and reset behavior in one workflow. The inputs are:

  • Current child weight: Use a current measured weight, not an age-based estimate.
  • Completed age in months: This checker is limited to one month through 11 years.
  • Label-confirmed amount per kg: Choose only the amount stated by the current product label, pharmacist or clinician.
  • Paracetamol strength on bottle: Brand names can have different products; match the printed mg per 5 mL.
  • Custom paracetamol strength: Enter the exact bottle concentration.
  • Single-ingredient product check: Combination cold or pain medicines may duplicate paracetamol.
  • Dose directions check: Confirm the selected mg/kg amount with the current label, pharmacist or clinician.

The result contract is:

  • Selected single dose: Weight multiplied by the selected, already-confirmed milligrams per kilogram.
  • Measured liquid volume: The selected dose converted using the exact printed syrup concentration.
  • 10 mg/kg boundary: The weight-based amount at 10 mg/kg, shown as a cross-check rather than a recommendation.
  • 15 mg/kg boundary: The weight-based amount at 15 mg/kg, shown as a cross-check rather than a recommendation.
  • Lower boundary volume: The lower cross-check amount converted to millilitres.
  • Upper boundary volume: The upper cross-check amount converted to millilitres.
  • Weight-based 24-hour ceiling: A 60 mg/kg arithmetic ceiling; the product label may impose a lower limit.
  • Bottle strength used: The concentration actually used in the conversion.

Changing any input makes the previous answer stale until the calculation is run again. Units remain attached to their values, and display rounding does not change the underlying calculation.

Interpretation, safety boundaries and limitations

Do not use the tool for a baby younger than one month, a child outside the supported weight range, an overdose, an unknown product, a combination medicine, liver disease, serious illness, repeated vomiting, dehydration or when the label directions are unclear. Seek urgent poison-centre or emergency advice after a suspected extra dose. The Weight-based 24-hour ceiling is not a personal schedule and does not replace the bottle maximum or clinical instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Does the brand name determine the strength?

No. Crocin, Dolo, Calpol and other brands can sell different formulations. Read the printed mg per 5 mL.

Does this choose 10, 12.5 or 15 mg/kg?

No. The user must supply an amount already confirmed by the label, pharmacist or clinician.

Can I use a combination cold medicine?

No. The checker requires a single-ingredient product because duplicate paracetamol can cause harm.

Is the printable result a prescription?

No. It is a record of the entered label details and arithmetic.
