Retirement Planner with Inflation & Fee Scenarios Method, Formula & Examples

On this page

This method guide explains the calculation sequence behind the Retirement Planner with Inflation & Fee Scenarios. It owns formulas, input definitions, timing, rounding and reference checks; the calculator remains the only page that performs the numeric scenario.

Calculation sequence

The saving phase compounds the opening balance and a growing annual contribution stream. The retirement phase values a growing annual income gap across the selected horizon using the entered net return and inflation rates.

Inputs and evidence

Use current written documents for every material input. The calculator supports: Market and currency, Current retirement savings, First-year contribution, Annual contribution growth, Years until retirement, Pre-retirement gross return, Annual investment fee, Annual inflation, Desired annual retirement spending in today’s money, Other annual retirement income in today’s money, Retirement gross return, Retirement horizon.

Reference example

With 100,000 saved, ten annual contributions of 10,000 and zero return or inflation, the retirement balance is 200,000. A 30,000 annual gap for 20 years requires 600,000 before other risks, leaving a 400,000 modeled gap.

Boundary and error checks

Test zero-rate branches where available, minimum and maximum supported inputs, and a scenario in which the main result reverses. Reject blank, non-finite or out-of-range values rather than silently substituting them.

Model boundary

The model excludes tax, account rules, contribution limits, sequence-of-returns risk, irregular cash flows, product guarantees, health costs and survivor needs unless the user includes them in spending or income.

Sources and review status

Sources and model boundaries checked 2026-10-08. This new opportunity-map expansion has automated formula, fixture and source QA but has not been represented as human editorial review. Keep the route noindex until CalculatorGeek records a completed YMYL editorial review.
