Fixed vs Variable Personal Loans

On this page

A fixed rate prices certainty; a variable rate transfers some future rate risk to the borrower. The starting variable payment is not the full comparison.

Fixed-rate structure

A fixed contractual rate normally keeps the principal-and-interest payment stable for the agreed term, subject to the exact contract. It improves budgeting certainty. Some fixed products restrict or charge for early repayment, so certainty can trade against flexibility.

Variable-rate structure

A variable rate follows the contract’s reference and margin rules. A change can alter the payment, the remaining term, or both. The model uses one entered rate change and recalculates the payment over the remaining term; that is a stress scenario, not a forecast of the lender method.

Stress-test a rate increase

Moneysmart suggests checking whether a borrower could still manage repayments if the rate rises by 2 or 3 percentage points. Test more than one path, compare the post-change and peak payment with available monthly buffer, and examine total outflow.

Also understand the falling-rate case

A variable rate may fall, but timing and lender pass-through are uncertain. Do not justify an unaffordable starting payment by assuming future cuts. A scenario table should include adverse, unchanged, and favorable paths where relevant.

Compare more than rate movement

Check extra-payment rights, early-settlement fees, redraw or reborrowing features, payment frequency, floors, caps, notice, reference-rate definitions, and what happens after missed payments. A fixed loan can be flexible; a variable loan can still have restrictions.
