Referral vs PFaaS vs Registered PayFac
On this page
Referral, PayFac-as-a-Service, and registered PayFac are commercial and operating models, not three automatic margin tiers. The agreement, funds flow, network role, geography, and responsibility allocation determine the real economics.
Referral or agent model
The platform typically refers or distributes a provider-led payment product and earns a contracted bounty, fee, or revenue share. It may have less pricing control and direct margin but also less underwriting, settlement, dispute, and compliance responsibility. The exact allocation comes from the contract.
PayFac-as-a-Service
An enabler can supply onboarding, processing, sponsor/acquirer connections, reporting, risk tooling, and merchant operations while the software platform owns more of the experience. Minimum commitments, buy rates, loss allocation, reserves, and service levels can matter more than the label.
Registered PayFac
A registered PayFac can gain more pricing and merchant control while assuming material network, sponsor/acquirer, onboarding, monitoring, dispute, funding, reporting, PCI, and operational duties. Registration does not remove the need for provider and bank relationships.
Compare more than gross margin
| Dimension | Questions |
|---|---|
| Economics | Revenue right, buy rate, minimum, loss, reserve, capital, fixed overhead |
| Control | Pricing, onboarding, data, payout, merchant support, product roadmap |
| Responsibility | KYB/KYC, monitoring, disputes, fraud, negative balances, PCI, reporting |
| Exit | Portability, data rights, reserves, termination assistance, wind-down |
Use modeled contribution with a responsibility matrix
Run independent scenarios from each written proposal, then place the result beside a named owner for every compliance, loss, support, funding, and operational task. Describe the winner only as the highest modeled contribution under those inputs.

Frequently asked questions
Can this guide replace a written contract or professional review?
No. It explains a reproducible planning method and the questions to verify; the applicable contract, official source, or qualified adviser controls.
Why are the assumptions shown instead of hidden defaults?
Financial results can change materially with tax, price, risk, cost, time, and responsibility assumptions. Visible inputs make the answer auditable.
How often should I revisit the result?
Recalculate whenever a quoted rate, fee, price, contract term, source rule, or risk allocation changes.
