Why Raw Score Conversion Is Not Exact

On this page

There is no single public raw-correct-to-scaled-score table for every digital SAT. Adaptive routing, item characteristics, and item-response scoring mean a correct-answer total by itself cannot reproduce the official 200-800 section score.

Direct answer

There is no single public raw-correct-to-scaled-score table for every digital SAT. Adaptive routing, item characteristics, and item-response scoring mean a correct-answer total by itself cannot reproduce the official 200-800 section score.

Method and required inputs

Treat raw counts as practice diagnostics only. For an official or Bluebook practice result, use College Board score output. If showing a planning estimate, name the practice form or assumptions and label the output as an estimate.

Worked example

A practice summary of 45 correct out of 54 Reading and Writing and 35 out of 44 Math is 80 out of 98 displayed questions. That arithmetic does not establish a particular official score, because it omits item and routing information used by the scoring model.

Assumptions and limitations

Correct counts from different forms or routes are not guaranteed to map to the same scaled result. Pretest questions also appear like operational questions but do not contribute to the section score.

Checks and common errors

  • Do not publish a universal raw conversion table.
  • Name the source test and score type.
  • Keep official, Bluebook-practice, and third-party estimates distinct.

Frequently asked questions

Does 80 correct out of 98 always produce the same SAT score?

No. The total alone lacks adaptive-route and item-response information, so it cannot determine the official scaled score.
