Recorded method

39 independent handoff examples and domain boundary tests in validate-planning-tools.js

These records describe the published model and reference tests. A test-case count is not a certification of every possible input or an independent specialist review. Editorial policy

Known limitations

  • A learning portal may count ungraded work as zero; the simple current grade must exclude the final.
  • Institution-specific replacement, unequal-point quiz drops and letter boundaries are not inferred.

    Reference inputs and expected results

Up to 12 configured examples are shown. Expected values are in the model's output units; invalid cases are intended to be rejected.

What score do I need on my final?

Enter your current grade excluding the final, your target course grade and the final's weight. A portal that treats ungraded work as zero is not necessarily showing the current grade this formula needs. The tool subtracts the locked coursework contribution, then divides the gap by the remaining weight.

For example, an 80% current grade with a 40%-weighted final needs 55% on that exam to finish with 70%: (70 - 80 × 0.60) / 0.40 = 55. Keep the unrounded threshold when judging whether a score is sufficient.

    Weighted assessments and dropped quizzes

Build a course from graded and ungraded rows whose weights total 100%. An ungraded item is unknown, not zero. With 75% at 40% weight and 80% at 30%, the locked contribution is 54 points; a 30%-weighted final needs 53.3333% for a 70% course target. For equal-weight completed quizzes of 60, 70, 80 and 90, dropping the lowest leaves an 80% quiz-category score. The category still keeps its original course weight.

When multiple items remain, the answer is a required weighted average, not a unique score for each item. Use scenario scores to compare plausible combinations. Unequal-point quiz replacement policies must be checked against the syllabus.

Exam pass gates and unreachable targets

A separate minimum final-exam score can be higher than the mark needed for the overall course target. For a 90% current grade, a 20%-weighted final and a 70% course target, the raw equation gives -10%. If the exam must be at least 50%, the effective requirement is 50% and the resulting overall grade is 82%.

A calculated requirement above the allowed exam maximum is not an input error. It means the target is unreachable under these weights and score bounds. With zero remaining weight, the grade is locked and no division is performed.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a final grade calculation the same as GPA?

No. This tool solves one course's percentage. The GPA Calculator weights grade points by course credits.

Should I enter ungraded work as zero?

No. Leave it ungraded unless zero is the earned and recorded score.

Can I pass the course but fail the final?

A separate exam pass gate can make that possible. Enter the gate from your syllabus.
