Percent Concentration vs Molarity

Percent concentration and molarity describe composition using different bases. You cannot convert a percentage to molarity until the percentage basis is known. A w/w percentage normally requires solution density; a w/v percentage requires molar mass but not solution density.

Convert percent by mass to molarity

For concentration P in % w/w, solution density rho in g/mL, and molar mass M_r in g/mol:

molarity = (10 × P × rho) / M_r

For a nominal 37% w/w solution, density 1.19 g/mL, and molar mass 36.46 g/mol:

molarity = (10 × 37 × 1.19) / 36.46 = 12.08 mol/L

Convert percent mass per volume to molarity

P% w/v means P grams per 100 mL of solution, so mass concentration is 10P g/L:

molarity = (10 × P) / M_r

For 0.900% w/v sodium chloride with molar mass 58.44 g/mol:

molarity = 9.00 g/L / 58.44 g/mol = 0.1540 mol/L

Why w/w requires density

Mass percent supplies grams of solute per mass of solution. Molarity requires moles per volume of solution. Density is the bridge between solution mass and solution volume. Without it, w/w does not determine a unique molarity.

Why v/v needs separate treatment

Volume percent describes component volume relative to solution volume. Converting that component volume to moles requires a defined component density or amount basis, chemical identity, purity, temperature basis, and assumptions about the stated solution. Do not reuse the w/w equation for v/v.

Can I convert any percentage directly to molarity?

No. The percentage basis must be known, and w/w normally requires solution density.

Is 1% always 1 g per 100 mL?

No. That describes 1% w/v. A 1% w/w solution contains 1 g of solute per 100 g of solution.

Does density refer to solute or solution?

For a w/w-to-molarity conversion, use density of the complete solution at the stated conditions.

Can I assume an aqueous solution has density 1 g/mL?

Not when accuracy matters. Concentrated solutions can differ substantially from that assumption.
