Life Insurance Calculators and Planning Guides
On this page
Start with the financial need, not a product. The CalculatorGeek life-insurance hub separates three questions: how much current lump-sum protection the entered household scenario needs, how that method differs from income multiples and DIME, and how long entered support or education needs continue. The tools do not quote premiums, collect underwriting data, rank insurers, or recommend term versus permanent coverage.
Choose the page that owns your question
| Question | Use | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| How large is the current coverage gap? | Life Insurance Needs & Coverage Gap Calculator | No premium, quote, underwriting, or product recommendation |
| Which calculation method should I use? | Life-insurance needs methods | No interactive result or universal multiplier |
| How long do the entered needs continue? | Life-insurance term-length planning | No prescribed term or policy type |
Build needs and resources before comparing policies
List immediate obligations, ongoing after-tax household spending, paid replacements for unpaid work, education or other timed goals, dependable survivor income, and verified benefits. Then subtract only existing cover and assets survivors can actually use. A product discussion that starts with a premium budget or salary multiple can hide which need is funded and which is not.
Moneysmart, NAIC, MoneyHelper, and FCAC all identify combinations of dependants, income replacement, debts, final expenses, education, or existing coverage as relevant. They do not establish one mandatory formula for every household.
Verify individual and workplace cover separately
Employer, group, death-in-service, pension, or super-linked cover can materially reduce a current gap, but it may be insufficient, restricted, or tied to employment or plan membership. Record it separately from individual cover. Check benefit amount, beneficiary, policy status, loans, exclusions, employment status, portability, conversion rights, and whether another asset figure already includes it.
Use four-market terminology without importing rules
| Market | Common language | Separate verification |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Life insurance, employer/group life, survivor benefits | SSA eligibility, beneficiary/estate treatment, policy and tax rules |
| United Kingdom | Life cover, death-in-service benefit, term assurance | Bereavement benefits, trusts, inheritance tax, employer plan |
| Canada | Life insurance, group benefits, CPP survivor pension | CPP eligibility, provincial estate rules, registered-plan amounts |
| Australia | Life cover/death cover, insurance through super | Super trustee and nomination rules, tax, embedded cover |
Evidence to collect before treating a scenario as current
- Current mortgage payoff or redemption balance and other debt statements.
- After-tax survivor spending, not the insured person’s gross salary.
- Dates when childcare, caregiving, education, debt, or support obligations change.
- Current individual and employer/group policy schedules and beneficiary details.
- Net accessible savings and investment values after tax, fees, loans, penalties, and restrictions.
- Government, pension, or plan benefit evidence from the responsible authority.
- A dated reason for every inflation, return, income-growth, and term assumption.

Protection questions outside this first release
Disability income, critical illness, total and permanent disability, long-term care, health insurance, annuities, business key-person or buy-sell cover, estate-liquidity planning, trusts, beneficiary law, tax, and claim handling require different inputs, authorities, and regulated context. They are not treated as synonyms for death-benefit needs.
Country rules and products change. The hub does not imply that a generic calculation is a legal, tax, or product decision.
Run the calculation, then document uncertainty
Use the Life Insurance Needs & Coverage Gap Calculator to produce the auditable ledger. Save the assumptions, run at least one lower-return or higher-cost scenario, verify workplace cover and restricted assets, and take the schedule—not only the headline—to a qualified professional or provider discussion.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need life insurance if I have no dependants?
Possibly not for income replacement, but debts, final expenses, a partner, unpaid services, business obligations, or a legacy goal can still create a need. Model only relevant items.
Is mortgage life insurance the same as personal life insurance?
Not necessarily. Ownership, beneficiary, balance, payout, portability, underwriting, and product terms can differ. Verify the actual contract.
Does the country setting calculate tax or public benefits?
No. Use it for currency and terminology. Enter only net usable amounts and benefits you have verified under current local rules.
Can this hub recommend an insurer or policy?
No. It separates the needs calculation and timing questions from premium, underwriting, carrier, and product-suitability decisions.
How often should the calculation be reviewed?
Review after material changes in dependants, debt, work, income, spending, education goals, assets, benefits, beneficiaries, policies, or market assumptions.
