| Case | Inputs | Expected result |
|---|---|---|
| Workday with break | 09:00 to 17:00, same day, 30-minute break | 7:30 net duration |
| Overnight interval | 22:30 to 06:15 next day, 15-minute break | 7:30 net duration |
| Midnight boundary | 23:30 to 00:15 next day | 0:45 duration |

Subtract the start from the selected same-day or next-day end, then subtract the break. From 9:00 to 17:00 with a 30-minute break, gross time is 8 hours and net duration is 7 hours 30 minutes.
Convert the result to another representation with the Decimal Hours Calculator.
gross minutes = adjusted end minutes - start minutes
net minutes = gross minutes - break minutes
Next-day mode adds 1,440 minutes to the end before subtraction.
09:20 to 14:05 is 285 gross minutes. After a 20-minute break, the net duration is 265 minutes, or 4 hours 25 minutes.
22:30 to 06:15 next day is 465 gross minutes. A 15-minute break leaves 450 minutes, or 7.5 decimal hours.
An end clock earlier than the start could be an error or an overnight interval. The calculator asks you to choose instead of silently assuming a rollover.
This tool uses clock components and a one-day relationship. A real dated interval across a daylight-saving transition may contain a different number of elapsed minutes and requires a date-aware time-zone workflow.
The entered break is subtracted arithmetically. The calculator does not determine whether a break is paid, compensable, or permitted under a particular rule.
For exact minute lookup values, use the Payroll Minutes-to-Decimal Chart.
Use the formatted duration to communicate elapsed hours and minutes, total minutes for aggregation, and decimal hours for rate calculations or compatible timesheet fields. The result keeps gross time, the entered break, and net time separate so another person can audit the subtraction.
Do not treat a decimal point as a clock separator: 7.5 hours means 7 hours 30 minutes. Keep full minutes through later arithmetic and round only the final decimal display. For a real interval that crosses a daylight-saving change, use actual dates and regional time zones rather than this wall-clock calculation.
Calculates net duration, Net decimal hours, Net minutes, and Gross duration from start hour (24-hour clock), Start minute, End hour (24-hour clock), and End minute with a visible method, validation, precision, and limitations.
Net minutes = adjusted end minutes - start minutes - break minutes. Keep the result label, unit, selected mode, and stated limitations together when sharing the answer.
Enter the end clock and select next day so 1,440 minutes are added before subtraction.
No. The definition rejects a break longer than the gross duration.
No. Use a dated time-zone workflow when the actual elapsed instant matters across a clock change.
The method uses standard elapsed-time arithmetic. CalculatorGeek fixtures cover same-day, overnight, midnight, break, ordering, and integer-component boundaries.
