A 1-year-old dog equals approximately 15 human years. After the first two years, aging depends on size: small dogs age more slowly than large or giant breeds. A 7-year-old small dog is about 44 human years; a 7-year-old giant breed is about 56 human years. The outdated “multiply by 7” rule does not account for these differences. This calculator uses AVMA size-adjusted tables (Advanced mode) and the UC San Diego epigenetic formula (Scientific mode).

Dog Years to Human Years by Size — Reference Table
Use this table for a quick lookup without the calculator. All dogs age fast in year one, but after age 5 the gap between small and giant breeds becomes dramatic.
| Dog Age | Small (under 10 kg) | Medium (10–25 kg) | Large (25–45 kg) | Giant (45+ kg) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 15 | 15 | 15 | 12 |
| 2 years | 24 | 24 | 24 | 22 |
| 3 years | 28 | 28 | 28 | 31 |
| 5 years | 36 | 36 | 36 | 45 |
| 7 years | 44 | 47 | 50 | 56 |
| 10 years | 56 | 60 | 66 | 79 |
| 12 years | 64 | 69 | 77 | 93 |
| 15 years | 76 | 83 | 93 | 114 |
Does 1 Dog Year Really Equal 7 Human Years?
No. The 7-year rule is a myth. The 7-year rule came from a simple observation: humans lived to about 70, dogs to about 10, so someone divided and got 7. But that ignores how aging actually works biologically.
A 1-year-old dog is not equivalent to a 7-year-old child. By their first birthday, dogs have reached sexual maturity, grown a full adult set of teeth, and are physically capable of reproducing. That puts them at approximately 15 human years, not 7. The 7-year rule does not account for these differences.
After the first two years, aging slows — but not evenly. A 7-year-old Chihuahua is entering middle age. A 7-year-old Great Dane is already a senior dog. The most accurate alternative comes from a 2020 UC San Diego study published in Cell Systems (Wang et al.), which mapped UCSD DNA methylation research 2020 across 104 dogs: human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. This is what Scientific mode uses.
Why Dog Size Affects How Fast They Age
In most animal species, bigger animals live longer. But within dogs, the opposite is true. Giant breeds age faster due to rapid growth in their first year. Typical lifespans by size:
- Small breeds (Chihuahua, Dachshund, Pug) — small dogs live 15 to 20 years
- Medium breeds (Border Collie, Labrador Retriever) — typically 10–15 years
- Large breeds (German Shepherd, Rottweiler) — typically 8–12 years
- Giant breeds (Great Dane, Saint Bernard, Mastiff) — typically 7–10 years
Giant breeds grow from a few hundred grams to 45+ kg within 12–18 months. This accelerated growth is linked to faster cellular aging, higher cancer rates, and earlier joint problems. A giant breed at age 6 is already approaching senior territory, while a small breed of the same age is still in their prime. This is why using AVMA size-adjusted dog age tables matters rather than a single multiplier.
Dog Life Stages Explained
Life stage: Puppy, Adolescent, Adult, Mature Adult, Senior, Geriatric — each has different nutritional needs, vet visit frequency, and activity levels. Your dog’s life stage is often more useful than the human-year number alone.
Puppy (0–1 Year)
The fastest development period. A 1-year-old dog has completed more milestones than a 7-year-old human child. Needs: socialization, core vaccinations, puppy-formula nutrition, and early obedience training.
Adolescent (1–2 Years)
The dog equivalent of a teenager. Energy is high, impulse control is low. Consistent training during this phase pays dividends for life. Transition from puppy food to adult food happens around 12–18 months.
Adult (2–7 Years)
Peak physical condition. Annual vet check-ups are sufficient. Dental hygiene becomes increasingly important — dental disease is one of the most common adult dog health issues. Longest life stage for small and medium breeds.
Mature Adult (7–9 Years)
Middle age begins. Metabolism slows — weight management matters more. Consider bi-annual vet visits. Joint supplements like glucosamine become relevant. For large and giant breeds this stage arrives earlier, around age 5–6.
Senior (9–12 Years)
Increased vet monitoring recommended. Senior-formula food supports changing nutritional needs. Shorter, gentler exercise is appropriate. Watch for cognitive changes and early organ decline. For large breeds Senior begins around age 8; for giant breeds as early as age 6.
Geriatric (12+ Years)
Comfort, warmth, and routine matter most. Regular blood panels catch organ changes early. Orthopaedic bedding and ramps improve quality of life. Giant breeds may reach Geriatric as early as age 9.
Simple vs. Advanced vs. Scientific Mode — What’s the Difference?
Simple mode uses a basic size-adjusted multiplier. Quick ballpark only — the least precise option.
Advanced mode uses AVMA size-adjusted dog age tables — the same methodology referenced by most veterinary practices. Best default for most dog owners. Covers all four size categories: Small, Medium, Large, and Giant.
Scientific mode uses the logarithmic epigenetic formula from the 2020 UCSD Cell Systems study: human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. This is a dog age by size calculator built on DNA-level research. A 2-year-old dog shows approximately 42 human years by this method because biological aging is very rapid early before it slows. Most reliable for medium dogs aged 1–16 years.

Frequently Asked Questions
How old is a 7-year-old dog in human years?
It depends on size. A 7-year-old small dog (under 10 kg) is approximately 44 human years. A medium dog is approximately 47 human years. A large dog is approximately 50 human years. A giant breed is approximately 56 human years. A 7-year-old small or medium dog is Mature Adult; a 7-year-old large or giant dog is already Senior.
How old is a 5-year-old dog in human years?
A 5-year-old small or medium dog is approximately 36 human years — solidly Adult stage. A 5-year-old large dog is also approximately 36 human years. A 5-year-old giant breed is approximately 45 human years, in the early Mature Adult stage where bi-annual vet visits become worthwhile.
How old is a 10-year-old dog in human years?
A 10-year-old small dog is approximately 56 human years. A medium dog is approximately 60 human years. A large dog is approximately 66 human years. A giant breed is approximately 79 human years — Geriatric stage, where regular blood panels and comfort-focused care are priorities.
How old is a 1-year-old dog in human years?
Approximately 15 human years regardless of size. 1 dog year equals approximately 15 human years — dogs mature so rapidly in their first year that they are developmentally far beyond a 7-year-old human child.
What is the most accurate dog age calculator?
The most scientifically accurate method uses the DNA methylation formula from UC San Diego (Cell Systems, 2020): human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. For everyday care decisions, the AVMA size-adjusted table (Advanced mode) is more practical and more widely used by veterinarians. This is a large dog age calculator and giant breed dog age tool in one.
Do smaller dogs age more slowly than larger dogs?
Yes. Small breeds (under 10 kg) typically live 15–20 years and stay Adult much longer. Giant breeds often live only 7–10 years and can enter Senior as early as age 6. The difference becomes most visible after age 5.
Can I use this calculator for cats?
Yes. Switch the toggle to Cat at the top. This pet age calculator covers cats using the AAFP standard table. No size selector needed. Cat life stages: Kitten (0–1 yr), Junior (1–2 yr), Adult (3–6 yr), Mature (7–10 yr), Senior (11–14 yr), Geriatric (15+ yr).
Is this dog age calculator vet-approved?
Advanced mode is based on AVMA size-adjusted guidelines used across veterinary practices. Scientific mode uses the peer-reviewed formula from Cell Systems (Wang et al., 2020). Educational use only — consult your vet for personalised health decisions.
What life stage is a 7-year-old dog in?
A 7-year-old small or medium dog is in the Mature Adult stage. A 7-year-old large dog is entering Senior. A 7-year-old giant breed is solidly Senior and may be approaching Geriatric — regular blood panels and joint monitoring are important.
Is 1 dog year 7 human years — myth or fact?
Myth. The 7-year rule is a myth that originated from a simple population average, not biological research. A 1-year-old dog is approximately 15 human years old, not 7. Size, breed, and DNA methylation rates all affect the real number.
